3-Methyl-4-nitrobenzoic acid is primarily used as a key starting material for the synthesis of the following types of drugs or active molecules:

**Key Intermediate for Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs)**
This is one of its most typical and important applications. 3-Methyl-4-aminobenzoic acid is obtained by reducing the nitro group to an amino group. This compound is a key intermediate in the synthesis of mefenamic acid.

Mefenamic acid is a classic fenamic acid-based NSAID used to relieve pain, inflammation, and fever, such as in the treatment of arthritis and dysmenorrhea.
